Finally V8 Supercars have returned to Perth's Barbagello Raceway. It has been a year since we last saw the mighty V8 Supercars battle it out on this track.

Perth has always been a very popular venue for V8 Supercars and race fans alike. It has always hosted very close and exciting races which often decide champions in the sport. Throughout the years this has been a very successful track for Holden but did this year's event live up to the hype and expectations?

Whincup Dominates Weekend

After a shocking weekend in Hamilton a couple of weeks ago, everyone was looking to the master of V8 Supercars to come back and completely dominate the race weekend in Perth. Jamie Whincup qualified on pole for the first race, which he won with relative ease. And after a 2nd place finish in race two, Whincup came back to win race 3 of the weekend. There is something about this man - ever since joining Team Vodafone a few years ago Jamie Whincup has been almost unstoppable on the racetrack, winning two championships in the last three years, which is almost unprecedented in V8 Supercars history.

One Of The Worst Crashes In V8 Supercars History

At the start of race two of the weekend we all witnessed one of the biggest crashes ever seen in V8 Supercars history. Karl Reindlar in the fair dinkum sheds Commodore was ready for the race but when the light went green his car stalled right in the middle of the track causing drama right down the field. But one driver, Steve Owen, could not manage to get his car out of the way and rear ended the stalled Holden at a speed of at least 100KPH, which is very frightening. The stalled Holden exploded into a ball of flames and luckily the rescue teams were right there on the spot and quickly got Reindlar and Owen out of their two burning race cars. It's moments like this that remind us of how dangerous motorsport can be and how good the safety equipment is in these machines.

How The Championship Stands

Jamie Whincup after this weekend has a very comfortable lead at the top of the V8 Supercars Championship ladder. He looks to be in a great position to challenge for the title once again this year after narrowly missing out on the title last year. Just who can challenge this great driver? Only time will tell. But one thing remains for certain, if one driver does not take charge and try to overtake Jamie Whincup, the champion of this years series will be decided sooner rather than later.
