Six Man Tag Team Match
Going into the PPV many people were wondering about whether or not The Miz would have a place on the card, as the news websites were reporting earlier today, the Miz did have a match. It was a six man tag team match which also featured Kofi Kingston, Alberto Del Rio, John Morrison, Rey Mysterio, and R Truth. It was a good old fashioned “heel” vs “face” match to kick off Summer Slam at the Staples Center. The match was relatively straightforward with all six of the superstars hitting their finishing moves and in the end Rey Mysterio triumphed giving the team of himself, John Morrison, and Kofi Kingston the win. This performance will come in handy when Rey Mysterio invokes his WWE Championship rematch clause against the champion on Raw tomorrow night.
Sheamus vs Mark Henry
In one of the most talked about matches of the night, people were beginning to question if anyone could stop the rampage of big Mark Henry. The entire WWE has been under threat as of late and Mark Henry has attacked just about everyone in the company, not just superstars, even some of the WWE production crew who work at ringside day in and day out. Bottom line is no one has been safe when Mark Henry has been around. There is only one man in the Smackdown locker room who could take on Henry with a fair chance of winning and that was the celtic warrior Sheamus. The match was pretty much dominated by Henry and he got the win by countout as Sheamus could not make it back into the ring after being thrown through the barricade by the dominant Mark Henry.
Kelly Kelly vs Beth Phoenix (WWE Divas Championship Match)
For a long time now WWE fans have been slightly unhappy with the Divas division in WWE, claiming that the matches are not long enough and are simply to easy to predict. Many people would have been predicting the same with this match but actually it turned out to be one of the better Diva matches of the year. Kelly Kelly and Beth Phoenix went toe to toe right throughout the match and just when it looked as though Kelly Kelly was going to get the pin, Beth Phoenix countered and began to dominate the champion. In the end after quite a beat down from Beth Phoenix, Kelly Kelly countered and got the pin to retain her title much to the anger of Beth Phoenix. Interesting times are ahead for the Divas division with Beth Phoenix claiming to end the “pretty” era of WWE Divas.
Wade Barrett vs Daniel Bryan
Last month Daniel Bryan shocked the wrestling world by winning Money In The Bank and therefore earning a contract for a championship match at any place, any time for up to a year. Since winning this, Bryan has announced he will cash in the contract at next year's Wrestlemania in Florida. However at SummerSlam he was going to have a match against former NXT Season 1 opponent and former boss of Nexus, the man from England, Wade Barrett at the Staples Center. Wade Barrett in my opinion deserves to have Money In The Bank and he proved that tonight by winning the match. The credibility of Daniel Bryan holding the Money In The Bank continues to be under threat.
Christian vs Randy Orton (No Disqualification World Heavyweight Championship Match)
In one of the most talked about matches of both superstars' careers, Christian was going into this match with a plan and he guaranteed victory. This match was a no disqualification match so it was sure that there would be a champion when the match was over. For me this was the best match of the night and both superstars left it all in the ring, it was a highly physical affair and did not take too long for the kendo stick to be introduced to the match. The biggest story of this match happened before the bell even rang. Christian's secret weapon for this match was his best friend Edge, who made a shocking return to the ring. However Edge turned on his best friend and left the champion to defend his title on his own. In the end it was Randy Orton who got the win and he is now the new World Heavyweight Champion.
CM Punk vs John Cena (WWE Championship Match)
Without a doubt this was the biggest match in WWE history. The new COO of WWE, Triple H was also the special guest referee for the match as he wanted to ensure a fair contest. CM Punk got the win and, after an attack from Kevin Nash, Alberto Del Rio cashed in his Money In The Bank contract to win the WWE title and shock the world.
